Like The Moral Economy of the Peasant, Scott's last book, this one makes a huge argument that should provoke ideological as well as duller academic tempers. All who think hard about problems of fundamental change in new states—and old ones, too—will profit from the uproar. Even without the argument, which makes Weapons of the Weak a great book, it would be a very good (although shorter) work.
