Many states of linear real scalar quantum fields (in particular Reeh–Schlieder states) on flat as well as curved spacetime are entangled on spacelike separated local algebras of observables. It has been argued that this entanglement can be ‘harvested’ by a pair of so-called particle detectors, for example singularly or non-locally coupled quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator Unruh detectors. In an attempt to avoid such imperfect coupling, we analyse a model-independent local and covariant…

In relativistic Quantum Field Theory (QFT) ideal measurements of certain observables are physically impossible without violating causality. This prompts two questions: i) can a given observable be

Asymptotic measurement schemes for every observable of a quantum field theory
In quantum measurement theory, a measurement scheme describes how an observable of a given system can be measured indirectly using a probe. The measurement scheme involves the specification of a probe
Quantum kicks near a Cauchy horizon
We analyse a quantum observer who falls geodesically towards the Cauchy horizon of a (1 + 1)-dimensional eternal black hole spacetime with the global structure of the non-extremal Reissner-Nordström

Progress and Visions in Quantum Theory in View of Gravity
  • 2020
We propose and develop a measurement scheme for quantum field theory (QFT) in curved spacetimes, in which the QFT of interest, the “system”, is dynamically coupled to another, the “probe”, in a
Detectors for probing relativistic quantum physics beyond perturbation theory
We develop a general formalism for a nonperturbative treatment of harmonic-oscillator particle detectors in relativistic quantum field theory using continuous-variable techniques. By means of this we
Impossible Measurements on Quantum Fields
It is shown that the attempt to extend the notion of ideal measurement to quantum field theory leads to a conflict with locality, because (for most observables) the state vector reduction associated
The Split Property for Locally Covariant Quantum Field Theories in Curved Spacetime
The split property expresses the way in which local regions of spacetime define subsystems of a quantum field theory. It is known to hold for general theories in Minkowski space under the hypothesis
Quantum fields in curved spacetime
For the O(N) field theory with λΦ4 self-coupling, we construct the twoparticle-irreducible (2PI), closed-time-path (CTP) effective action in a general curved spacetime. From this we derive a set of
THERMAL EQUILIBRIUM STATES OF A LINEAR SCALAR QUANTUM FIELD IN STATIONARY SPACE–TIMES
The linear scalar quantum field, propagating in a globally hyperbolic space–time, is a relatively simple physical model that allows us to study many aspects in explicit detail. In this review, we
Coherent and incoherent states of the radiation field
Methods are developed for discussing the photon statistics of arbitrary radiation fields in fully quantummechanical terms. In order to keep the classical limit of quantum electrodynamics plainly in
Quantum Fields and Local Measurements
The measurement process is considered for quantum field theory on curved spacetimes. Measurements are carried out on one QFT, the "system", using another, the "probe" via a dynamical coupling of
Generally covariant quantum field theory and scaling limits
The formulation of a generally covariant quantum field theory is described. It demands the elimination of global features and a characterization of the theory in terms of the allowed germs of
