In the present thesis, using an effective field theory point of view, we explore theories of single-field inflation where higher derivative operators become relevant, affecting in a novel way the dynamics and therefore the observations. For instance, concerning the scalar spectrum, they allow for measurable equilateral non-Gaussianity, whose amplitude can differ significantly from the predictions of other existing models. Moreover, we show that the stability and the consistency of such theories…

Quantum corrections in Galileons from matter loops

Galileon interactions represent a class of effective field theories that have received much attention since their inception. They can be treated in their own right as scalar field theories with a

The effective field theory of dark energy

We propose a universal description of dark energy and modified gravity that includes all single-field models. By extending a formalism previously applied to inflation, we consider the metric

Covariant Master Theory for Novel Galilean Invariant Models and Massive Gravity

Coupling the galileons to a curved background has been a tradeoff between maintaining second order equations of motion, maintaining the galilean shift symmetries, and allowing the background metric

Nonrenormalization and naturalness in a class of scalar-tensor theories

We study the renormalization of some dimension-4, 7 and 10 operators in a class of nonlinear scalar-tensor theories. These theories are invariant under: (a) linear diffeomorphisms which represent an

Cosmology of the Galileon from Massive Gravity

We covariantize the decoupling limit of massive gravity proposed in arXiv:1011.1232 and study the cosmology of this theory as a proxy, which embodies key features of the fully non-linear covariant

Models of non-relativistic quantum gravity: the good, the bad and the healthy

Hořava’s proposal for non-relativistic quantum gravity introduces a preferred time foliation of space-time which violates the local Lorentz invariance. The foliation is encoded in a dynamical scalar

Symmetries for Galileons and DBI scalars on curved space

We introduce a general class of four-dimensional effective field theories which include curved space Galileons and DBI theories possessing nonlinear shift-like symmetries. These effective theories

Galilean Genesis: An Alternative to inflation

We propose a novel cosmological scenario, in which standard inflation is replaced by an expanding phase with a drastic violation of the Null Energy Condition (NEC): >> H2. The model is based on the

The Pseudo-Conformal Universe: Scale Invariance from Spontaneous Breaking of Conformal Symmetry

We present a novel theory of the very early universe which addresses the traditional horizon and flatness problems of big bang cosmology and predicts a scale invariant spectrum of perturbations.

Starting the Universe: Stable Violation of the Null Energy Condition and Non-standard Cosmologies

We present a consistent effective theory that violates the null energy condition (NEC) without developing any instabilities or other pathological features. The model is the ghost condensate with the
