Malaria is the most widespread and relevant parasitic disease worldwide; it is primarily transmitted by bites of Anopheles sp., but can also be transmitted congenitally or through infected blood transfusions. The major species infecting humans are Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax. Even considering that both species lead to severe disease, the first has been traditionally associated to more deaths, mostly in the African continent.
