Abstract A wavelet-based method for compression of three-dimensional simulation data is presented and its software framework is described. It uses wavelet decomposition and subsequent range coding with quantization suitable for floating-point data. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated by applying it to example numerical tests, ranging from idealized configurations to realistic global-scale simulations. The novelty of this study is in its focus on assessing the impact of compression…

Optimization of sub‐band coding method for seismic data compression

Seismic data volumes, which require huge transmission capacities and massive storage media, continue to increase rapidly due to acquisition of 3D and 4D multiple streamer surveys, multicomponent data

Improving Weather Forecast Skill through Reduced-Precision Data Assimilation

AbstractA new approach for improving the accuracy of data assimilation, by trading numerical precision for ensemble size, is introduced. Data assimilation is inherently uncertain because of the use

A Warm-Bin–Cold-Bulk Hybrid Cloud Microphysical Model*

This study describes a newly developed bin‐bulk hybrid cloud microphysical model named MSSG-Bin, which has been implemented in the Multi-Scale Simulator for the Geoenvironment (MSSG). In the hybrid

An Immersed Boundary Method for the Weather Research and Forecasting Model

This paper describes an immersed boundary method that facilitates the explicit resolution of complex terrain within the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Mesoscale models, such as WRF,

Wavelet‐based data compression for flow simulation on block‐structured Cartesian mesh

Three compression cases for incompressible and compressible flow simulations, including a large‐scale simulation with O(10 8) mesh points, demonstrate that the present compression method gives both high compression ratios and good qualities of compressed data.

The “Cubed Sphere”

A new gridding technique for the solution of partial differential equations in spherical geometry is presented. The method is based on a decomposition of the sphere into six identical regions,
