We report laboratory experiments on rippled granular surfaces formed under rolling wheels. Ripples appear above a critical speed and drift slowly in the driving direction. Ripples coarsen as they saturate and exhibit ripple creation and destruction events. All of these effects are captured qualitatively by 2D soft-particle simulations in which a disk rolls over smaller disks in a periodic box. The simulations show that compaction and segregation are inessential to the ripple phenomenon. We… Expand

Scaling and dynamics of washboard roads.
TLDR
This work investigated the dependence of the critical speed on various parameters and described a scaling argument that leads to a dimensionless ratio, analogous to the hydrodynamic Froude number, which controls the instability. Expand
Ripples and Grains Segregation on Unpaved Road
Ripples or corrugations are common phenomena observed in unpaved roads in less developed countries or regions. They cause several damages in vehicles leading to increased maintenance and productExpand
Granular and fluid washboards
Abstract We investigate the dynamics of an object towed over the surface of an initially flat, deformable layer. Using a combination of simple laboratory experiments and a theoretical model, weExpand
Bulldozing of granular material
Abstract We investigate the bulldozing motion of a granular sandpile driven forwards by a vertical plate. The problem is set up in the laboratory by emplacing the pile on a table rotating underneathExpand
Finite element analysis of periodic ripple formation under rigid wheels
Abstract In recent years, various numerical simulation methods have been applied to vehicle terrain interaction problems. In this study, the formation of periodic ripples under a rigid wheel wasExpand
Experimental Study on the Dynamics of Washboard Road on Various Surfaces
Washboarding is the spontaneous formation of transverse ripple on dirt road. It is usually found on unpaved heavytraffic road under dry weather condition. Driving over washboard road may increaseExpand
Smoothing out sandpiles : rotational bulldozing of granular material
Predicting the dynamics of dense granular flow plays an important role in engineering and geophysical flow which involve the transport of granular materials such as for instance cereals, rocks orExpand
Grains and Dust Dynamics
We have studied impact drag force and impact cratering mechanics thus far in this book. As a target material, dense granular beds have been principally considered. Soft impact with a loose granularExpand
Granular segregation induced by a moving subsurface blade.
TLDR
DEM simulations are used to study segregation resulting from a subsurface blade moving through a bed of size-bidisperse spherical particles to find the rate of segregation decreases with each pass so that the degree of segregation asymptotically approaches its maximum value. Expand
A continuum model of drag and lift forces for inclined planes dragged through granular beds
Abstract Both drag and lift forces impact an inclined plane when it is dragged through a granular bed. In this paper, the following results have been obtained: the drag and lift forces grow with theExpand

The term ‘complexity’ has recently sprung into the physical and social sciences, humanities and semi-popular writings. ‘Complexity’ practices are constituted as something of a self-organizing globalExpand
