Wi-Fi, short for Wireless Fidelity, is a wireless technology that allows you to connect to the Internet without the physical attachment of wires or cables. Once called the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), the Wi-Fi Alliance, which was formed in 1999, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to certifying the interoperability of wireless Local Area Network (LAN) products based on the IEEE 802.11 specification. One excellent advantage of Wi-Fi is its fast data transmission speeds. Another key advantage of Wireless Fidelity is the reliability of a good connection. Wi-Fi is also very easily integrated into existing wired-Ethernet networks. One of the most obvious disadvantages is you must be in range of an access point. Another technology that is competing with Wi-Fi currently is wide-area mobile broadband. “The benefit of this technology over Wi-Fi is that you do not have to hunt for a hot spot, and you can get service where there is not a hot spot.” Wireless Fidelity is truly an amazing new technology that will change our lives. Once this trend begins to gain momentum, more and more people will become Wi-Fi users, until it will eventually become a part of our everyday existence.
