WING-SPREADING BEHAVIOUR OF THE CORMORANT Phalacrocorax carbo
@inproceedings{Sellers2007WINGSPREADINGBO, title={WING-SPREADING BEHAVIOUR OF THE CORMORANT Phalacrocorax carbo}, author={Robin M. Sellers}, year={2007} }
This paper describes an investigation into the factors influencing the occurrence and duration of the wing-spreading behaviour of the Cormorant. It was found to occur only after a period in the water (that is, when the plumage was wet), and its duration to be inversely related to wind speed and the length of time spent in the water. In addition birds tended to face into the wind during wing-spreading and, at low wind speeds, away from the sun. The extent to which the wings were spread was also…

Orientation to solar radiation in black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou)
- Environmental ScienceJournal of Comparative Physiology A

It is calculated that a black wildebeest adopting parallel orientation throughout the diurnal period would absorb 30% less radiant heat than the same animal adopting perpendicular orientation.
Daily variations in the thermoregulatory behaviors of naked neck broilers in an equatorial semi-arid environment
- Biology, MedicineInternational journal of biometeorology
- 2014
It can be concluded that naked neck broilers adjust their behavior in response to daily variations in the thermal environment and wing-spreading and beak-opening behaviors are important adaptive responses to the thermal challenges posed by the equatorial semi-arid environment.

It is concluded that the flight and contour feathers exhibit morphological and mechanical features that are advantageous for specific habitats and feeding techniques that suit their specific habitat and feeding habits.
Takeoff flight performance and plumage wettability in Cassin’s Auklet Ptychoramphus aleuticus, Xantus’s Murrelet Synthliboramphus hypoleucus and Leach’s Storm-petrel Oceanodroma leucorhoa
- BiologyJournal of Ornithology
- 2009
Examination of takeoff performance both before and after experimentally submerging the birds indicated that wingbeat frequency, speed and mass-specific power (peak and mean), and energy per wingbeat decreased in all species when plumage was experimentally wetted, whereas mean acceleration increased.

Modeling Flightless Galapagos Seabirds as Impacted by El Nino and Climate Change
- Environmental Science
- 2014
Results suggest the current Cormorant population is still stable, but the Penguin faces a 20% probability of extinction in 100 years if current conditions remain, and interventions such as captive breeding could be suitable for population recovery.
Effects of temperature on gular fluttering and evaporative water loss in four sympatric cormorants in southern Africa
- Environmental Science
- 2014
Findings indicate that temperature increases from climate change will likely have serious direct impacts on nesting cormorant colonies in southern Africa by as much as 25% by 2100 under current projected temperature increases and increases in water loss could reach nearly 10%.
Vestiges of the natural history of development: historical holdovers reveal the dynamic interaction between ontogeny and phylogeny
- BiologyEvolution: Education and Outreach
- 2014
Examples of developmental remnants are presented, which often involve circulatory and reproductive alterations, and numerous other retained or reappearing historical holdovers are discussed in ways that reveal the unfolding dynamic interaction between genotype and phenotype.

Spread-winged behaviour of double-crested and flightless cormorants Phalacrocorax auritus and P. harrisi: wing drying or thermoregulation?
- Environmental Science
- 2008
Spread-winged behaviour in Double-crested and Flightless Cormorants appears to function primarily in wing drying and not in gaining or losing heat, although the ultimate goal of wing drying may be to conserve metabolic energy.
Spread-wing postures and the water repellency of feathers: a test of Rijke's hypothesis
