Abstract We report observations of Willets (Catoptrophorus semipalmatus) using White Ibis (Eudocimus albus) as “beaters” to disturb prey and kleptoparasitizing (stealing) prey from them. Our observations occurred at J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island, Florida on 8 December 2004. We observed these behaviors in four White Ibis-Willet pairs and describe one instance in detail and document it with photographs. To our knowledge this is the first documentation of a Willet…

The Influence of Food Density, Flock Size, and Disturbance on the Functional Response of Bewick’s Swans (Cygnus columbianus bewickii) in Wintering Habitats

How Bewick’s swans adopt flexible foraging strategies and vary their feeding behavior components in response to disturbance, flock size, and food density is elucidated.

What makes a tactile forager join mixed-species flocks? A case study with the endangered Crested Ibis (Nipponia nippon)

The investigated the foraging and antipredator benefits that the Crested Ibis may get while foraging in single-species flocks and in mixed- species flocks with Little Egrets during the nonbreeding season and found that in single the proportion of time spent vigilant and increased that spent foraging as total flock size increased.
