When he sailed from Guatulco (now the expanding Mexican holiday resort of Bahias de Huatulco) on 16 April 1579, the Golden Hind was heavy laden with silver and gold, precious stones, 'fine China silks', and four chests full of 'erthen dishes, very finely wrought [from China], which the Spanyards greatly esteme'.1 Such a valuable cargo had to reach England intact.
