Nine hundred case histories of malfunctioning towers reported over the last 50 years were surveyed and analyzed. Our analysis shows rapid growth in the number of malfunctions with no signs of decline. Plugging, especially of tray active areas, packing and distributors, tops the malfunctions list. Coking (ree nery towers only), scale and corrosion, and precipitation were the most common causes. The tower base comes second, where liquid level rising above the reboiler inlet caused premature e ood…
Safety issues related to the maintenance operations in a vegetable oil refinery: A case study
Abstract The present work was focused on maintenance hazards related to vegetable oil refining. An incident occurred in an Italian vegetable oil refinery was presented to evidence this safety
Distillation Column: Review of Major Disturbances
TLDR
A critical review of the various disturbances and operational difficulties in the distillation column and the causes, consequences and recommendation to handles various anomalies in distillation has been presented which may help to identify the root cause while doing detection and diagnosis of various faults.
Uncertainty reduction for improved mishap probability prediction: Application to level control of distillation unit
At all levels, the understanding of uncertainty associated with risk of major chemical industrial hazards should be enhanced. In this study, a quantitative risk assessment (QRA) was performed for a

TLDR
Systematic troubleshooting using detailed column and thermosiphon simulation, neutron backscatter, plant data reconciliation and flow regime analysis ruled out possible reasons for lowered heat transfer due to steam superheat, or the presence of non-condensables in the steam, leaving reduced heat transfer on the tube side as the strongest suspect.
CFD and experimental studies of liquid weeping in the circular sieve tray columns
a b s t r a c t Sieve trays are widely used in fractionating devices like tray distillation towers existing in separation and purification industries. The weeping phenomenon that has a critical
Hydrodynamics of Foaming Systems in Packed Towers
Foaming can be a serious problem in the process industry. For packed columns foaming is often reported for treatments of sour gases with alkaline solutions (e.g. amine scrubbing), but also for
On-line Diagnosing on Trayed Column of Etylene Plant Using Gamma Ray Scanning
