We present a study of the waiting time distributions (WTDs) of solar energetic particle (SEP) events observed with the spacecraft WIND and GOES. The WTDs of both solar electron events (SEEs) and solar proton events (SPEs) display a power-law tail of ∼Δt−γ. The SEEs display a broken power-law WTD. The power-law index is γ1 = 0.99 for the short waiting times (<70 hr) and γ2 = 1.92 for large waiting times (>100 hr). The break of the WTD of SEEs is probably due to the modulation of the corotating…

Dynamic SEP event probability forecasts

The forecasting of solar energetic particle (SEP) event probabilities at Earth has been based primarily on the estimates of magnetic free energy in active regions and on the observations of peak

Do the solar flares originating from an individual active region follow a random process or a memory-dependent correlation?

We investigate the waiting time statistics of solar flares both in a flare-productive active region (AR 12673) of the solar cycle 24 and in a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulated

Coronal Mass Ejections over Solar Cycles 23 and 24

We present a statistical analysis of solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) based on 23 years of quasi-continuous observations with the LASCO coronagraph, thus covering two complete Solar Cycles (23 and

Automated Detection of Small-scale Magnetic Flux Ropes in the Solar Wind: First Results from the Wind Spacecraft Measurements

We have developed a new automated small-scale magnetic flux rope (SSMFR) detection algorithm based on the Grad–Shafranov (GS) reconstruction technique. We have applied this detection algorithm to the

A COMMON STOCHASTIC PROCESS RULES GAMMA-RAY BURST PROMPT EMISSION AND X-RAY FLARES

Prompt γ-ray and early X-ray afterglow emissions in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are characterized by a bursty behavior and are often interspersed with long quiescent times. There is compelling evidence

The Waiting-Time Distribution of Solar Flare Hard X-Ray Bursts

A waiting-time distribution is constructed for 8 yr of solar flare hard X-ray bursts observed by the ICE/ISEE 3 spacecraft. The observed distribution is compared with a simulated waiting-time

A STATISTICAL STUDY OF SOLAR ELECTRON EVENTS OVER ONE SOLAR CYCLE

We survey the statistical properties of 1191 solar electron events observed by the WIND 3DP instrument from <1 keV to ≳300 keV for a solar cycle (1995 through 2005). After taking into account times

The Origin of the Solar Flare Waiting-Time Distribution

It is shown analytically how the observed power-law behavior of the waiting times originates in the exponential distribution of flaring rates, which is argued to be consistent with a nonstationary avalanche model for flares.

Solar Flare Waiting Time Distribution: Varying-Rate Poisson or Lévy Function?

The waiting time distribution for solar flares has been considered. Using Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite X-ray data, we show that a local Poisson hypothesis for solar flares is not

ELECTRON AND PROTON ACCELERATION DURING THE FIRST GROUND LEVEL ENHANCEMENT EVENT OF SOLAR CYCLE 24

High-energy particles were recorded by near-Earth spacecraft and ground-based neutron monitors (NMs) on 2012 May 17. This event was the first ground level enhancement (GLE) of solar cycle 24. In this

The solar coronal magnetic field is proposed to be in a self-organized critical state, thus explaining the observed power-law dependence of solar-flare-occurrence rate on flare size which extends
