In this brief review we summarize a number of recent developments in the study of vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates, a topic of considerable theoretical and experimental interest in the past few years. We examine the generation of vortices by means of phase imprinting, as well as via dynamical instabilities. Their stability is subsequently examined in the presence of purely magnetic trapping, and in the combined presence of magnetic and optical trapping. We then study pairs of vortices and… Expand
Few-Particle Vortex Cluster Equilibria in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Existence and Stability
Motivated by recent experimental and theoretical studies of fewparticle vortex clusters in Bose-Einstein condensates, we consider the ordinary differential equations of motion and systematicallyExpand
Vortex interaction dynamics in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates
Motivated by recent experiments studying the dynamics of configurations bearing a small number of vortices in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), we illustrate that such systems can beExpand
A tale of two distributions: from few to many vortices in quasi-two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensates
TLDR
The number of vortices N is considered as a parameter and the prototypical configurations (‘ground states’) that arise in the case of few or many vortsices are explored and the classical result illustrating that vortex polygons in the form of a ring are unstable for N≥7 is modified. Expand
Stability of quantized vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in an optical lattice
We investigate the existence and especially the linear stability of single- and multiple-charge quantized vortex states of nonlinear Schrodinger equations in the presence of a periodic and aExpand
Rotating matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates
Abstract In this paper we consider analytically and numerically the dynamics of waves in two-dimensional, magnetically trapped Bose–Einstein condensates in the weak interaction limit. In particular,Expand
Dynamics of vortex formation in merging Bose-Einstein condensate fragments
We study the formation of vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) that has been prepared by allowing isolated and independent condensed fragments to merge together. We focus on the experimentalExpand
Existence, stability and nonlinear dynamics of vortices and vortex clusters in anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates
We study vortex excitations in one-component Bose-Einstein condensates, with a special emphasis on the role of anisotropic confinement for the existence, stability and dynamical properties ofExpand
Dynamics of vortex dipoles in confined BoseEinstein condensates
Abstract We present a systematic theoretical analysis of the motion of a pair of straight counter-rotating vortex lines within a trapped Bose–Einstein condensate. We introduce the dynamical equationsExpand
Observation of vortex dipoles in an oblate Bose-Einstein condensate.
TLDR
By controlling the flow velocity, this work determines the critical velocity for the nucleation of a single vortex dipole, with excellent agreement between experimental and numerical results. Expand
Three-dimensional vortex structures in a rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate
We study the three-dimensional ground state vortex lattice structures of purely dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). By using the mean-field model we obtain a stability diagram for the vortexExpand

Observation of Vortex Lattices in Bose-Einstein Condensates
TLDR
The observation of dislocations, irregular structure, and dynamics indicates that gaseous Bose-Einstein condensates may be a model system for the study of vortex matter. Expand
Vorticity in Bose-Einstein condensed atomic gases
Abstract Vortices have been studied extensively in liquid helium and in superconductors. In 1995, a third generic system to study vorticity became available: Bose–Einstein condensed (BEC) diluteExpand
Pinning of vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate by an optical lattice.
We consider the ground state of vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that turning on a weak optical periodic potential leads to a transition from the triangular Abrikosov vortex lattice toExpand
Vortex-lattice dynamics in rotating spinor Bose-Einstein condensates.
TLDR
The stability of the square structure is proved by its response to applied shear perturbations, and an interference technique shows the spatial offset between the two vortex lattices. Expand
Observation of long-lived vortex aggregates in rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates.
TLDR
The formation of large vortex aggregates in a rapidly rotating dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensate is studied, and a giant vortex core comprising 7 to 60 phase singularities is formed that will refill with distinguishable single vortices after many rotation cycles. Expand
