Abstract The shoulder gland secretions of captive males of the Indian flying fox (Pteropus giganteus), the little golden-mantled flying fox (P. pumilus), the island flying fox (P. hypomelanus), and the large flying fox (P. vampyrus) were examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Sixty-five compounds, including hydrocarbons, carboxylic acids, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, and amides, were identified among the four species. Many of these compounds, such as squalene, cholesterol…

Chemical Composition of the Substances from Dorsal Patches of Males of the CuraÇAoan Long-Nosed Bat, Leptonycteris curasoae (Phyllostomidae: Glossophaginae)
- Biology
- 2012
The results, when considered along with previous observations, suggest that the dorsal patch in males of L. curasoae promotes the attraction of females during the mating season, and/or provides protection against ectoparasites.
Hemiterpenoids and Pyrazines in the Odoriferous Urine of the Maned Wolf ( Chrysocyon brachyurus )
- Biology
- 2013
Solid phase dynamic extraction (SPDE)/GC-MS is employed to identify a number of volatile compounds in maned wolf urine, including sulphur-containing hemiterpenoid alcohols, and a variety of pyrazines, some of which are known to be insect pheromones.
Repellency of Naturally Occurring Volatile Alcohols to Fungus Gnat Bradysia sp. nr. coprophila (Diptera: Sciaridae) Adults Under Laboratory Conditions

It is indicated that certain essential oil constituents repel fungus gnat adults, which may be useful, from a practical standpoint, in deterring adults from laying eggs into growing media.

The role of male forearm crust odour in fringe-lipped bats (Trachops cirrhosus)
- BiologyBehaviour
- 2019
The results suggest that in this Neotropical bat species, reproductive males could use odorous signals in the forearm crust to mediate interactions between reproductive males and potentially avoid costly competition for mates or aggression.
Reproductive behaviour and population dynamics of the Indian Flying Fox Pteropus giganteus
- Biology
- 2012
Reproductive behaviour and population dynamics of Indian Flying Fox Pteropus giganteus were studied in a maternal colony in Uttar Pradesh and female bats involved in copulation during the spring season gave birth at the beginning of June, in contrast to earlier reports.
Laboratory Studies of Aedes aegypti Attraction to Ketones, Sulfides, and Primary Chloroalkanes Tested Alone and in Combination with L-Lactic Acid
- ChemistryJournal of the American Mosquito Control Association
- 2015
Suppression or inhibition of attraction response was observed for combinations that contained ketones of C7-C12 molecular chain length (optimum in the C8-C10 range), similar to that observed previously for specific ranges of carboxylic acids, aldehydes, and alcohols.
Outcomes from an anti-gonadotropin-releasing hormone immunotherapeutic trial in large flying foxes (Pteropus vampyrus).
- Medicine, BiologyAmerican journal of veterinary research
- 2023
The positive long-term effects on behavior and multiyear reduction of hormones suggest that the use of this immunotherapeutic warrants further investigation, although the results should be taken into consideration with other factors such as handling, treatments, chronicity of lesions.
