Voids are the most prominent feature of the large-scale structure of the universe. Still, their incorporation into quantitative analysis of it has been relatively recent, owing essentially to the lack of an objective tool to identify the voids and to quantify them. To overcome this, we present here the VOID FINDER algorithm, a novel tool for objectively quantifying voids in the galaxy distribution. The algorithm first classifies galaxies as either wall galaxies or field galaxies. Then, it…

The (> Half) Empty Universe

Voids are the most prominent feature of the large-scale structure of the universe. Still, they have been generally ignored in quantitative analysis of it, essentially due to the lack of an objective

On the Structure, Shapes, and Alignments of Voids

On its largest scales, the Universe exhibits a particular structure, known as the cosmic web, in which clusters of galaxies are separated by tenuous voids. Due to their tenuousness, these voids

The Size and Shape of Voids in Three-dimensional Galaxy Surveys

The sizes and shapes of voids in a galaxy survey depend not only on the physics of structure formation, but also on the sampling density of the survey and on the algorithm used to define voids. Using

Voids in the Two-Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey

We present an analysis of voids in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). This analysis includes identification of void regions and measurement of void statistics. The 2dFGRS is the largest

Clues on void evolution – I. Large-scale galaxy distributions around voids

We perform a statistical study focused on void environments. We examine galaxy density profiles around voids in the SDSS, finding a correlation betwe en void‐centric distance to the shell of maximum

Voids in the SDSS galaxy survey

Using the method of searching for arbitrary shaped voids in the distribution of volume-limited samples of galaxies from the DR5 SDSS survey, we have identified voids and investigated their

The evidence of absence: galaxy voids in the excursion set formalism

We present an analytical model for the sizes of voids in the galaxy distribution. Peebles and others have recently emphasized the possibility that the observed characteristics of voids may point to a

The structure of voids

Using high resolution N-body simulations we address the problem of emptiness of giant 20h −1 Mpc–diameter voids found in the distribution of bright galaxies. Are the voids filled by dwarf galaxies?

Properties of voids in the 2dFGRS galaxy survey

A method for detecting voids in the galaxy distribution is presented. Using this method, we have identified 732 voids with a radius of the seed sphere Rseed > 4.0h−1 Mpc in a volume-limited sample of

Statistics of voids in the two‐degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey

We present a statistical analysis of voids in the two-degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). In order to detect the voids, we have developed two robust algorithms. We define voids as

Automated Detection of Voids in Redshift Surveys

We present a new void search algorithm for automated detection of voids in three-dimensional redshift surveys. Based on a model in which the main features of the large-scale structure (LSS) of the

On the origin of the voids in the galaxy distribution

The distribution of galaxies on scales larger than approx.10 h/sup -1/ Mpc seems to be characterized by large voids, (20--40) h/sup -1/ Mpc in diameter and of amplitude deltaapprox.-(0.7--0.8). It

A catalogue of the voids in the IRAS 1.2- Jy survey

Using the VOID FINDER algorithm we have compiled a catalogue of voids in the IRAS 1.2-Jy sample. The positions of the voids correspond well to underdense regions seen in the IRAS smoothed density

Voids in Real Space and in Redshift Space

Using two-dimensional numerical simulations of gravitational clustering, with initial power spectra of a power-law form with index n, we compare the properties of voids in real space to their

The Mass Distribution in the Nearby Universe

We present a new reconstruction of the mass density and the peculiar velocity fields in the nearby universe using recent measurements of Tully-Fisher distances for a sample of late spirals. We find

LARGE-SCALE STRUCTURE IN THE LAS CAMPANAS REDSHIFT SURVEY

In this paper we employ a core-sampling analysis to find characteristic scales for the large- and the superlarge-scale structure (LSS and SLSS, respectively) in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey

Void statistics, scaling, and the origins of large-scale structure

The probability that a volume of the universe of given size and shape spaced at random will be void of galaxies is used here to study various models of the origin of cosmological structures.

A quantitative approach to the topology of large-scale structure

A quantitative measure of the topology of large-scale structure: the genus of density contours in a smoothed density distribution, is described and applied. For random phase (Gaussian) density

Voids in the southern galactic cap

The characteristics of the large underdense regions in the southern galactic cap detected by the Southern Sky Redshift Survey (SSRS) is investigated. Toward this end, a quantitative method is

The void spectrum in two-dimensional numerical simulations of gravitational clustering

An algorithm for deriving a spectrum of void sizes from two-dimensional high-resolution numerical simulations of gravitational clustering is tested, and it is verified that it produces the correct
