The US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) recognizes two forms of problematic drinking: 'willful alcohol abuse', a behavioural problem, and 'alcohol dependence', a true medical disorder, which includes a genetic component, that can be scientifically understood and medically treated.
