Although Merlin’s doom was caused by a woman, medieval literature provides us with two different representations of her and then two narratives: Viviane locking up Merlin in an airy jail through love, or Nivienne entombing him through hate. Today, the portrayal of Viviane consists of both versions, albeit unequally, in Anglo-Saxon romances in which the couple is unattainable, and in French ones, where it imposes itself as evidence.
