Th e gametophyte generation plays a critically important, but oft en underappreciated, role in driving fern evolution through site selection and thus distribution and population diff erentiation. Chambers and Emery (2016) investigated population diff erentiation using the gametophyte generation of a fern species, Vittaria appalachiana , because of its well-studied history and the unusual opportunities it presents for analysis of selection and adaptation to climate change.
