Recent studies have shown that related genetic influences on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover are related to allelic variations in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene. Osteoporosis as a complication of hyperthyroidism is characterized by increased rates of both bone formation and bone resorption.
