Calcitriol, via its receptor (VDR) is a main regulator of PTH secretion and parathyroid cell proliferation. Recently, marked overrepresentation of the polymorphic VDR alleles b, a, and T was found in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT), which suggests pathogenic importance in the disease.
