Preeclampsia has been suggested to result from a partial breakdown of tolerance to the developing fetus after maternal immune maladaptation. Several of the proposed immunomodulatory properties of the hormonal vitamin D system could potentially have beneficial effects for successful maintenance of pregnancy.
