Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary, the cause of late blight disease, is economically the most important pathogen of potatoes worldwide, including the Czech Republic. The disease has become a worldwide problem since its causal involvement in the Irish potato famine in the mid-19th century (B o u r k e , 1964). The incident initiated a period of potato breeding for late blight resistance.
