There is no generally accepted definition for a virtual world, with many complimentary terms and acronyms having emerged implying a virtual world. Advances in networking techniques such as host migration of instances, mobile ad hoc networking, and distributed computing, bring in to question whether architectures can actually support a virtual world. Without a concrete definition, controversy ensues and it is problematic to design an architecture for a virtual world. Several researchers provided…

Demographics of Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds, as both a concept and an industry, has changed radically over the past 10 years, from a toy for the technological elite, to an over-hyped marketing phenomenon, to a needed

What is a virtual world? Definition and classification

A new framework for the definition of virtual worlds is presented, arguing what it is for a world to be virtual, the user experience that is a necessary part of this and the technical features which afford this and for the first time the relationships between commonly confused terms and technologies are identified.

Survey of state melding in virtual worlds

This article presents a taxonomy of consistency models and categorization of state update dissemination technologies for virtual worlds, and applies the taxonomy to case study several state-of-the-art virtual worlds.

3D Virtual worlds and the metaverse: Current status and future possibilities

Moving from a set of independent virtual worlds to an integrated network of 3D virtual worlds or Metaverse rests on progress in four areas: immersive realism, ubiquity of access and identity,

A Framework for Immersive Virtual Environments (FIVE): Speculations on the Role of Presence in Virtual Environments

It is proposed that the degree of immersion can be objectively assessed as the characteristics of a technology, and has dimensions such as the extent to which a display system can deliver an inclusive, extensive, surrounding, and vivid illusion of virtual environment to a participant.

Designing Virtual Worlds

In this age of modern era, the use of internet must be maximized to get the on-line designing virtual worlds book, as the world window, as many people suggest.

Spatiotemporal Modeling of a Pervasive Game

The goal here is to help designers contend with the spatiotemporal representations and the analysis thereof; and to show that Peuquet’s Triad Representational Framework from the domain of GIS is applicable to specifically the sub-domain of pervasive games that maintain a virtual model of physical space and time.

A Survey of Characteristic Engine Features for Technology-Sustained Pervasive Games

This book scrutinizes pervasive games from a technological perspective, focusing on the sub-domain of games that satisfy the criteria that they make use of virtual game elements, and investigates if a game engine can be repurposed to stage pervasive games.

Spatiotemporal modeling of a pervasive game

An integrated spatiotemporal conceptual model for pervasive games that maps the physical to the internal computerized representation (i.e., the virtual), accounts for virtual game entities as objects with relations, and highlights redundancies is proposed.

A case study in pervasive game design: the songs of north

A location aware mixed reality game called The Songs of North, which was designed to demonstrate possible technical and game design solutions for pervasive games, found that utilizing user requirements and overcoming technical limitations in actual design process is a hard challenge and requires creativity.
