Surface acoustic wave (SAW) based particle manipulation is contactless, versatile, non-invasive and biocompatible making it useful for biological studies and diagnostic technologies. In this work, we present a sensitive particle sorting system, termed the virtual membrane, in which a periodic acoustic field with a wavelength on the order of particle dimensions permits size-selective filtration. Polystyrene particles that are larger than approximately 0.3 times the acoustic half-wavelength…

Acoustic tweezing of particles using decaying opposing travelling surface acoustic waves (DOTSAW).
TLDR
This work shows that by controlling the powers of the opposing incoherent waves, 5 μm particles can be migrated laterally across a fluid flow to defined locations with an accuracy of ±10 μm.
The importance of travelling wave components in standing surface acoustic wave (SSAW) systems.
TLDR
This study shows that this previously neglected complexity of the SAW field is a critical factor in the nature of the resultant streaming field, as it gives rise to strong streaming rolls at the channel walls, which are validated experimentally.
Surface acoustic wave diffraction driven mechanisms in microfluidic systems.
TLDR
This work seeks a better understanding of the various effects arising from the incidence of a finite-width SAW beam propagating into a quiescent fluid, and presents five distinct mechanisms within an individual SAW system.
The size dependant behaviour of particles driven by a travelling surface acoustic wave (TSAW).
TLDR
An experimental and numerical study of the transition in acoustophoretic behaviour of particles influenced by relative dominance of these three mechanisms and characterise it based on particle diameter, channel height, frequency and intensity of the TSAW driven microfluidic system will enable better understanding of the performance of TSAW sorters and allow the development of TSAw systems for particle collection and patterning.
Particle Separation inside a Sessile Droplet with Variable Contact Angle Using Surface Acoustic Waves.
TLDR
The effect of the droplet contact angle on particles' concentration behavior and consequent separation of particles has been uniquely studied in this SAW-based report.
Selective particle and cell capture in a continuous flow using micro-vortex acoustic streaming.
TLDR
This work characterize the forces relevant for vortex formation in a combined streaming/lateral flow system, and uses these acoustic streaming vortices to selectively capture 2 μm from a mixed suspension with 1 μm particles and human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MDA-231 from red blood cells).
A Pumpless Acoustofluidic Platform for Size-Selective Concentration and Separation of Microparticles.
TLDR
The acoustofluidic device was capable of rapidly processing a large volume of sample fluid pumped through the microchannel using an external syringe pump and a small volume of the sample fluid was processed through the device using a capillary flow and a hydrodynamic pressure difference that did not require an external pumping device.
Acoustofluidics with High Selectivity Using Spatiotemporal Modulated SAWs
Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) based microfluidics show promising applications in bio-particle processing due to the attributes of simple fabrication and high efficiency. However, most of the SAWs

TLDR
The aerosol jet geometry, in terms of width, cone angle, and elevation angle, is examined, and its stability at low power, and hence low flow rates are observed.
