Establishing a direct causative relationship etween a virus and a specific kidney disease ften is problematic. Documenting a pathogeetic role for a specific virus typically involves emonstration of viral antigens and host antibodes in blood and/or kidney tissue. Simply docuenting a virus or viral particles in the kidney oes not prove causation because viral particles ay be present without clinical disease.
