High virus counts were found in Arctic sea ice samples taken during the spring ice algal bloom near Resolute, Northwest Territories, Canada. Viral abundances in the sea ice ranged from 3.7 X 10" viruses m-2 (or 9.0 X 106 ml-l) to 4.9 X 10" m-2 (1.3 X 10' ml-l) which is 10to 100-fold greater than the concentration of viruses in the underlying water column (1.1 X 106 ml-l).
