The ability of shape-transforming cationic, anionic, zwitterionic, and nonionic amphiphiles to induce vesiculation in human erythrocytes was studied. At concentrations where they exhibit maximum protection against hypotonic haemolysis (CAHmax) echinocytogenic amphiphiles induced a rapid release of exovesicles.
