A revised picture of the organization of endothelial plasmalemmal vesicles is presented. Three-dimensional reconstructions of endothelial segments from frog mesenteric capillaries and rat heart capillaries based on ultrathin serial sectioning have shown that plasmalemmal vesicles are not true vesicles but parts of an elaborate system of invaginations of the surface membrane.
