ABSTRACT The vertebral column has evolved to accommodate the broad range of locomotor pressures found across vertebrate lineages. Xenarthran (armadillos, sloths and anteaters) vertebral columns are characterized by xenarthrous articulations, novel intervertebral articulations located in the posterior trunk that are hypothesized to stiffen the vertebral column to facilitate digging. To determine the degree to which xenarthrous articulations impact vertebral movement, we passively measured…

It is shown that posterior thoracic vertebrae grow at a slower rate, while anterior thoracics and lumbars grow atA faster rate relatively, with rates decreasing anteroposteriorly in the former and increasing antero‐operatively in the latter.

It is proposed that different proportions between vertebrae and vertebral regions might result from differences in growth pattern and timing of ossification, which might in turn correlate with expression patterns of Hox genes.

A comprehensive study of the vertebral column of Chaetophractus villosus, a representative of Chlamyphoridae, in order to provide a more reliable comparative framework among armadillos and to elucidate the patterns of distribution of this trait among xenarthrans.
AutoBend: An Automated Approach for Estimating Intervertebral Joint Function from Bone-Only Digital Models
- BiologyIntegrative organismal biology
- 2021
This work describes and experimentally validate AutoBend, an automated approach to estimating intervertebral joint function from bony vertebral columns, and presents a new approach for estimating joint stiffness directly from oROM and morphometric measurements that can successfully reconstruct the craniocaudal patterns, but not magnitudes, derived from experimental data.

Effect of captivity on the vertebral bone microstructure of xenarthran mammals
- Biology, Environmental ScienceAnatomical record

The results add to the understanding of variation in mammalian bone microstructure, suggest caution when including captive specimens in bonemicrostructure research, and indicate the need to better replicate the habitats, diets, and behavior of animals in captivity.
Phenotypic integration in the carnivoran backbone and the evolution of functional differentiation in metameric structures
- BiologyEvolution letters
- 2021
This work investigates morphological integration between all the presacral vertebrae of mammalian carnivorans to provide a better understanding of how regionalization in metameric structures evolves and proposes natural selection as the main factor shaping this pattern to stabilize some regions and to allow coordinate movements in others.

This work develops a model of latch-mediated spring actuated (LaMSA) systems relevant to comparative biomechanics and bioinspired design and finds that the muscle forcevelocity trade-off and muscle activation have similar effects on directly actuated performance.
Joint mobility as a bridge between form and function.
- BiologyThe Journal of experimental biology
- 2023
The value of joint mobility as a lens through which to study articular form and function is discussed, so as to better illuminate the basics of 'how joints work' and be well positioned to tackle comparative investigations of the diverse repertoire of vertebrate animal motion.

Comparisons with functional data from other digging mammals indicate that the modified mechanical properties of the Dasypus column are consistent with an interpretation of xenarthra as digging adaptations and lend support to the idea that the order Xenarthra represents an early offshoot of placental mammals specialized for fossoriality.
