Vero Wynne–Edwards–or Wynne as he was affectionately known to his friends and colleagues–died in his sleep on 5 January 1997, in his 91st year. His life had thus spanned most of a century, his only marriage had lasted 68 years until his death, his scientific publications had appeared over a period of 68 years, and he had held the Regius Chair of Zoology at Aberdeen for 28 years, until his retirement in 1974. Only one person, among his early biological colleagues, has outlived him.
