  • Reports from the eastern Pacific have long suggested that only one or two wide-ranging species of the genus Lepidophthalmus occurred there, depending upon whether the names L. bocourti and L. eiseni were treated as separate species or synonyms. A new species, L. rafai, was recently described from a single locality in southern Colombia.
