Recent investigations demonstrate that the boundaries of the basal ganglia extend towards the ventral surface of the mammalian brain, and the terms ventral striatum and ventral pallidum have been introduced to emphasize this fact. Experimental neuroanatomical studies are reviewed which seem to indicate that much of the output of the ventral striato-pallidal system is directed toward motor targets.
