Vector ability of mosquitoes for isolates of Plasmodium elongatum from raptors in Florida.
@article{Nayar1998VectorAO, title={Vector ability of mosquitoes for isolates of Plasmodium elongatum from raptors in Florida.}, author={Jai K. Nayar and James W. Knight and Sam R Telford}, journal={The Journal of parasitology}, year={1998}, volume={84 3}, pages={ 542-6 } }
Three isolates of Plasmodium elongatum were obtained from 3 species of raptors (red-tailed hawk [Buteo jamaicensis], bald eagle [Haliaeetus leucocephalus], and eastern screech owl [Otus asio]) from Florida using isodiagnostic techniques in Pekin ducks (Anas platyrhynchos). Six to 10 species of mosquitoes were tested for susceptibility to these 3 isolates. Complete development of the sporogonic cycle of the 3 isolates of P. elongatum occurred in 3 species of mosquitoes, Culex nigripalpus, Culex…

A NEW SPECIES OF PLASMODIUM FROM MALAGASY VANGAS
- BiologyThe Journal of parasitology
- 2005
During a recent examination of blood smears from Malagasy birds, a species of avian Plasmodium unlike those currently known was observed, and is classified as a member of the subgenus Haemamoeba because of gametocyte and schizont shape, displacement of the host cell nucleus, as well as distortion of theHost cell.
Do mosquitoes filter the access of Plasmodium cytochrome b lineages to an avian host?
- BiologyMolecular ecology

Evidence suggests that parasite–mosquito associations do not restrict the access of parasites to birds but instead may actually facilitate the switching of vertebrate hosts that occurs over evolutionary time.

The results expand the knowledge of the Flaviviridae, reveal a striking pattern of decoupled host/virus coevolution on a continental scale, and highlight knowledge gaps about health and conservation in even the most iconic of wildlife species.

Mosquito assemblage was differentially influenced by land-use change and seasonality, but at the same time the assemblages is rather homogeneous across the studied landscape, suggesting a high degree of spatial connectivity.
