Specimens obtained by transurethral sphincterectomy from patients with spinal cord injury and carcinoma of the bladder were studied immunohistochemically. In the smooth muscle region of the sphincter, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-, substance P- and somatostatin-immunoreactive fluorescent, varicose nerve fibers were seen.
