The mitochondrial antioxidant manganese superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) plays a critical cytoprotective role against oxidative stress. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was shown previously to induce expression of Mn-SOD in endothelial cells by a NADPH oxidase-dependent mechanism.
