In Great Britain some girls begin to menstruate in their 10th or 11th years, while others who are equally healthy may not experience menarche until they 'are 14, 15, or even older. Menarche is, however, only a single event in the combination of physical changes which constitute puberty. The adolescent growth spurt, the development of the breasts, and the growth of the pubic hair occur more or less concurrently, and take, on the average, about 3 years from beginning to completion, with menarche…
Variations in the Pattern of Pubertal Changes in Boys
TLDR
Mixed longitudinal data on the physical changes at puberty in 228 normal boys are presented together with normal standards for stages of genital and pubic hair development, finding that boys' genitalia begin to develop only about 6 months later than the girls' breasts and Pubic hair appears about 1½ years later in boys than in girls.
Diagnosis of Precocious Puberty in Girls
TLDR
The aim of this review was to examine the diagnosis of central precocious puberty (CPP) taking in account clinical practice and international literature.
Menstruation in Adolescents
TLDR
Girls are experiencing earlier pubertal development than previously noted, suggesting that guidelines for the evaluation of potentially pathologic precocious puberty be reassessed and consideration should be give to evaluating adolescents with bleeding that is either too frequent or too infrequent.
Recent Secular Trends in Pubertal Timing: Implications for Evaluation and Diagnosis of Precocious Puberty
TLDR
Evidence suggests that age at the gonadotropin and sex steroid surges have not changed, and it looks as if an increasing proportion of contemporary early pubertal girls may experience isolated gonadotropic-independent thelarche rather than central PP, which may not be discernible on Pubertal examination alone.
The pubertal timing controversy in the USA, and a review of possible causative factors for the advance in timing of onset of puberty
  • A. Slyper

    Clinical endocrinology

TLDR
It is proposed that pubertal onset, although not necessarily the tempo of puberty, is influenced by hyperinsulinaemia and insulin resistance, and if this hypothesis is correct, insulin resistance may be more prevalent in US children than previously recognized.
A comparison of pubertal maturity and growth
TLDR
A successful modelling of testis growth led to a new pubertal milestone, APTV, and the high correlations between the phenomenologically different domains “linear growth” and “pubertal development” allow the conclusion that these different domains develop along similar biological mechanisms, which are steered mainly by genetic factors.
Review of the Literature on Current Changes in the Timing of Pubertal Development and the Incomplete Forms of Early Puberty
TLDR
Premature Pubarche/Adrenarche, Premature Thelarche, and Premature Menarche are incomplete forms of precocious pubertal development that have their origin in endocrine mechanisms that only recently have started to be understood.
Primary and Secondary Amenorrhea
Puberty represents a particular period of life characterized by hormonal changes and physical and psychological modifications leading children from childhood to adolescence. During this period,
Pattern of pubertal changes in Calabar, South South Nigeria
TLDR
The onset of puberty is occurring at an earlier age than previously reported in Nigeria with a secular trend of a decreasing age at onset of menstruation with similar ages reported from western countries.

Studies on Puberty
TLDR
Part I of the present series explored certain features of differential growth in relation to qualitative changes taking place at puberty, indicating specific hormonal influences on three sexually-differential indices of body build, viz. bispinous width of pelvis, bisacro mial width of shoulders, and neck girth.
Individual differences in physical changes associated with adolescence in girls.
TLDR
The pediatrician is in a strategic position to aid developing adolescents in understanding and evaluating their own development.
SEXUAL MATURATION OF CHINESE GIRLS IN HONG KONG.
TLDR
Comparison of the mean age of menarche with that in some other countries indicates that Chinese girls are among the very earliest ones to mature, and the possibility of the presence of a secular trend in the mean ages of attaining sexual maturation of Chinese girls is discussed.
Growth at Adolescence
TLDR
This beautifully printed and well-illustrated stiff paperbacked volume is, and will for a few years yet remain, an invaluable companion to a full-scale textbook on congenital heart disease.
Indices of physiological maturity: derivation and interrelationships.
TLDR
The objectives of the present study were to determine the degree of generality in adolescent physical growth by means of a factorial analysis of the intercorrelations among various measures of maturation and assign each young person a Maturity Score which would be based on the best single measure or combination of measures of the hypothetical factor.
