We present variational calculations using a Gaussian trial function to calculate the ground state of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and to describe the dynamics of the quasi-two-dimensional solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Furthermore, we extend the ansatz to a linear superposition of Gaussians, improving the results for the ground state to exact agreement with numerical grid calculations using imaginary time and the split-operator method. We are able to give…

Dynamics of solitons in the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Abstract We investigate bright solitons in the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation in the framework of an extended variational approach. We apply the latter to the stationary ground state of the

Variational approaches to dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

In this work several aspects of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated. These condensates have attracted much interest since their experimental realization and offer the chance to explore

Engineering bright matter-wave solitons of dipolar condensates

We present a comprehensive analysis of the form and interaction of dipolar bright solitons across the full parameter space afforded by dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates, revealing the rich behavior

Solitons in dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates with a trap and barrier potential

The propagation of solitons in the dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate in a trap potential with a barrier potential is investigated. The regimes of soliton transmission, reflection and splitting as a

Vortical and fundamental solitons in dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates trapped in isotropic and anisotropic nonlinear potentials

We predict the existence of stable fundamental and vortical bright solitons in dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates with repulsive dipole–dipole interactions (DDI). The condensate is trapped in the

The wavefunction of the collapsing Bose–Einstein condensate

Bose–Einstein condensates with tunable interatomic interactions have been studied intensely in recent experiments. The investigation of the collapse of a condensate following a sudden change in the

Symmetry-breaking thermally induced collapse of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate a Bose-Einstein condensate with additional long-range dipolar interaction in a cylindrically symmetric trap within a variational framework. Compared to the ground state of this system,

A variational solution to fundamental solitons in superlattices

Abstract A variational technique is established to study the fundamental solitons in a superlattice’s potential. The variational results show that the fundamental solitons can only exit in the

A variational solution to solitons in parity-time symmetric optical lattices

Abstract.A variational technique is established to study the fundamental solitons in parity-time symmetric optical lattices. The variational results show that the fundamental solitons can exist in

Stable and mobile excited two-dimensional dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate solitons

We demonstrate robust, stable, mobile excited states of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) solitons for repulsive contact interaction with a harmonic trap along
