OBJECTIVE To determine the inflammatory potential of basic calcium phosphate (BCP) crystals, which have been identified in human joints. METHODS Hydroxyapatite, carbonate apatite, whitlockite, and octacalcium phosphate crystals were injected in rat air pouches. Volume and cellularity of the exudate were measured.
