Enzymes of tyrosine biosynthesis (prephenate dehydrogenase and arogenate dehydrogenase) were characterized in 90 species currently classified within the genera Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas, and Alcaligenes. Variation in cofactor specificity and regulatory properties of the dehydrogenase proteins allowed the separation of five groups.
