We provide a selective overview of the academic research literature on value and growth investing. Different explanations for the performance of value versus growth stocks are discussed. Empirical research on the alternative explanations is reviewed, and some new results are provided with an updated sample. The evidence suggests that, even after taking into account the experience of the late 1990s, value investing generates superior returns.
