Telemonitoring is one of the most expedient answers to the strong need for preventive care imposed by the rapidly aging society. We propose an innovative solution to the detection of early signs of frailty by presenting a serious game controlled by a smart sensorized soft plastic ball, designed to achieve continuous home-based monitoring of muscle weakness in older adults. Design, development, and testing of the smart ball and of the game interface devised to guide the monitoring procedure are…

A smart ball sensor fabricated by laser kirigami of graphene for personalized long-term grip strength monitoring

Grip strength is an important indicator of health conditions and needs to be monitored for health management. However, different populations (e.g., babies and rehabilitation patients) have different

Integrating Social Assistive Robots, IoT, Virtual Communities and Smart Objects to Assist at-Home Independently Living Elders: the MoveCare Project

This work presents the MoveCare system, an unobtrusive platform that, through the integration of a SAR into an AAL framework, aimed to monitor, assist and provide social, cognitive, and physical stimulation in the own houses of elders living alone and at risk of falling into frailty, and provides strong empirical evidence that Socially Assistive Robots integrated with monitoring and stimulation platforms can be successfully used for long-term support to older adults.

Community Based Activity Center to Support Independently Living Elders

A novel platform that integrates an activity center and a virtual community aimed to provide monitoring, stimulation and assistance at the point of need to independent living elders, especially those who are at risk of falling into frailty is described.

Measuring Grip Strength in Older Adults: Comparing the Grip-ball With the Jamar Dynamometer

The Grip-ball could be used in practice to enable home-based self-monitoring of grip strength in older adults but might have difficulty detecting “smaller” differences that were detected by the Jamar dynamometer.

Exergame for Continuous and Transparent Monitoring of Handgrip Strength and Endurance

An exergame to continuously and transparently monitor handgrip strength and endurance in older persons is developed, representing a promising, non-intrusive tool to help detecting early signs of frailty in community-dwelling older persons.

Wireless instrumented cane for walking monitoring in Parkinson patients

The instrumented cane prototype is under trials to be adopted for the Parkinsonian community, in order to monitor their ambulation during rehabilitation sessions and as a proposal to detect the “mysterious clinical phenomenon” that is the Freezing of Gait (FoG).

Comparison of the Grip Strength Using the Martin-Vigorimeter and the JAMAR-Dynamometer: Establishment of Normal Values.

The influence of the hand's anatomy on the grip strength was greater using the JAMAR-Dynamometer than it was using the Martin-Vigorimeter, and the amount of data for meta-analyses relating to hand surgical issues can be significantly increased.

A review of the measurement of grip strength in clinical and epidemiological studies: towards a standardised approach.

A standardised method of measuring grip strength would enable more consistent measurement of grip strength and better assessment of sarcopenia.

Physical Behavior in Older Persons during Daily Life: Insights from Instrumented Shoes

Gait analysis emphasizes the importance of metrics such as foot clearance in daily life assessment and underline that measures of physical behavior and gait performance are complementary, especially since gait parameters were not correlated to complexity.

The MOVECARE Project: Home-based Monitoring of Frailty

Here, it is described how home-based monitoring of frailty is addressed within MoveCare, specifically for the five Fried criteria.

Statistical Methods For Assessing Measurement Error (Reliability) in Variables Relevant to Sports Medicine

It is recommended that sports clinicians and researchers should cite and interpret a number of statistical methods for assessing reliability and encourage the inclusion of the LOA method, especially the exploration of heteroscedasticity that is inherent in this analysis.
