This review outlines the basic properties of T-tubules in skeletal muscle cells, and the factors that govern reversible vacuolation in T-tubules under experimental conditions. Comparable membranous transformations, involving the plasma membrane or occurring intracellularly, in non-muscle cells are then considered.
