A new method for water determination of latex paints that gives reliable and precise results is presented. This method agrees with the results obtained using the traditional Karl Fischer titrations of EPA Method 24; therefore eliminating the need for Karl Fischer titrations. Equipment needs are minimal and the procedure is performed quickly and conveniently. Hopefully, in the future EPA Method 24 will not be the only method accepted by regulatory agencies. Until that time, however, this new…

Sources of error in VOC determination via EPA method 24

Forty-five paint samples having volatile organic content (VOCs) ranging from 7 to 562 g/L were prepared and tested for VOC according to EPA Method 24. In addition, all individual raw materials

Direct VOC analysis of water-based coatings by gas chromatography and solid-phase microextraction

Solvents in water-based coatings may be determined by sampling the coating head space using solid phase microextraction and gas chromatographing the extract. Several water-based coatings of known

Karl-Fischer-Reagentien ohne Pyridin (3)

SummaryNon-pyridinic reagents react more quickly and give more accurrate results than a conventional reagent. The most exact values are obtained when using a two-component reagent (SO2 +

Rheology modifiers for low VOC bake coatings

The Technical Committee of the New York Society for Coatings Technology investigated commercially available additives for their influence on the rheology of low volatile organic compounds (VOC)

New surfactant technology for waterborne coatings and inks

A new generation acetylenic diol based surfactant provides performance benefits in a variety of waterborne systems. It gives outstanding surface tension reduction, moderate to low foam, low VOC

Use of castor oil in the preparation of various oil-based binders

Styrenated oil, urethane oil, and oil modified alkyd resin were prepared by using castor oil in a different way. For this purpose, castor oil was initially subjected to an interesterification

Karl Fischer-Reagentien ohne Pyridin

SummaryKarl Fischer-Reagents containing SO2 and amine in the normally applied molar ratio of 1∶2 can be prepared only by using pyridine. Strong basic amines lead to a rapid decomposition of the

Research generally fares poorly in '95 budgets, but NSF, NIST buck trend

The 103rd Congress managed to accomplish at least one task on time and under budget before it adjourned for the '94 fall campaign season. It enacted all 13 of the appropriations bills needed to keep

Estimation of the glass transition temperature of acrylic copolymers

A series of 18 acrylic copolymers was synthesized and characterized by GPC for molecular weight and by DSC for the T g s. It was found that measured T g values (using DSC) differ from estimated
