The fine structure and distribution of tight (zonula occludens) and gap junctions in epithelia of the rat pancreas, liver, adrenal cortex, epididymis, and duodenum, and in smooth muscle were examined in paraformaldehyde-glutaraldehyde-fixed, tracer-permeated (K-pyroantimonate and lanthanum), and freeze-fractured tissue preparations. While many pentalaminar and septilaminar foci seen in thin-section and tracer preparations can be recognized as corresponding to well-characterized freeze-fracture…

Intercellular junctions of the hen parathyroid gland. A freeze-fracture study.

The fine structure of the intercellular junctions of the hen parathyroid gland was studied using freeze-fracture replicas and thin sections, and the possible significance of these junctions is discussed in relation to the function of theParathyroid parenchymal cell.

Ultrastructural study on junctional complexes of the excurrent duct epithelia in the epididymal region in the fowl.

The results suggest that the tight junctions can restrict the diffusion of materials via the paracellular route, and that they play an important role in maintaining a suitable fluid environment within the excurrent ducts.

An electron microscope study of the development of the exocrine and endocrine pancreas with special reference to intercellular junctions.

The results suggest that intercellular junctions play important roles in pancreatic development, in particular, the transient development of maculae occludentes is associated with endocrine cell development, and inter cellular communication mediated by gap junctions may be important for the differentiation of acinar and endocrine cells.

The distribution, size and configuration of tight and gap junctions in the guinea pig inner ear were examined in aldehyde-fixed and non-fixed freeze-etched tissue preparations and possible pathological alterations of the tightjunctions in some inner ear diseases are discussed.

Maturation of tight junctions in guinea-pig cecal epithelium

It is demonstrated that the structure of tight junctions and the permeability to lanthanum of the guinea-pig cecal epithelium change during maturation of cells, indicating that permeability decreases as the epithelial cells mature.

Definitive Evidence for the existence of tight junctions in invertebrates

The contention that tight junctions exist in the tissues of the invertebrata in spite of earlier suggestions that (a) they are unique to vertebrates and (b) septate junctions are the equivalent invertebrate occluding structure is supported.

Structure and turnover of junctional complexes between principal cells of the rat epididymis

Images as the invagination of a portion of the lateral plasma membrane of one principal cell into another, constriction of theinvaginated area and eventual detachment leading to the formation of annular junctions suggest that there is a turnover of plasma membranes.

A freeze-fracture and lanthanum tracer study of the complex junction between Sertoli cells of the canine testis

This is the first demonstration in a vertebrate tissue of a true septate junction, associated with specializations of the Sertoli cell cytoplasm, that is clearly distinguished from tight junctions.

A FINE STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF INTERCELLULAR JUNCTIONS IN THE MOUSE LIVER

Acetone does not cause any detectable change in the structure of the zonula occludens, but the occluding junction becomes leaky to lanthanum following acetone treatment, and the effects of other reagents on the junctions are reported.

JUNCTIONAL COMPLEXES IN VARIOUS EPITHELIA

The tight junction is impervious to concentrated protein solutions and appears to function as a diffusion barrier or "seal," and the desmosome and probably also the zonula adhaerens may represent intercellular attachment devices.

JUNCTIONS BETWEEN INTIMATELY APPOSED CELL MEMBRANES IN THE VERTEBRATE BRAIN

Endothelial and epithelial tight junctions occlude the interspaces between blood and parenchyma or cerebral ventricles, thereby constituting a structural basis for the blood-brain and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barriers.

Gap junctions between electrotonically coupled cells in tissue culture and in brown fat.

An electron microscopic study of replicas of frozen-fractured BHK21 cells and brown fat cells of newborn mice indicates that gap junctions, when they are the only intercellular junctions present, are sufficient to account for electronic coupling between cells.

A STUDY OF THE STRUCTURE AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE NEXUS

The nexuses which occur in epithelia in frog skin and rat salivary gland are distributed as though to provide seals against electrochemical backleaks and sites of chemical exchange between cell interiors.

Fine structure of the surface of mouse hepatic cells.

Mouse hepatic cells appear in thin sections as polygons with six or more sides that may contact either bile canaliculi, the narrow intercellular space, the space of Disse or extensions of the spaceof Disse between adjacent cells.

It is suggested that the large boutons on soma or proxi- mal dendrites either possess special metabolic requirements associated with post- junctional protein synthesis, or perhaps a quantitatively greater need than other junctional regions on the adult motoneuron receptive surface.

HEXAGONAL ARRAY OF SUBUNITS IN INTERCELLULAR JUNCTIONS OF THE MOUSE HEART AND LIVER

A new technique, based on the observations of Doggenweiler and Frenks, has allowed us to demonstrate the presence of similar structures in sections of mouse heart and of mouse liver.
