Turning vehicles are a potential threat to pedestrians at intersections. As a possible countermeasure, an experimental auditory pedestrian signal was developed to prompt pedestrians to look for turning vehicles at the start of the walk signal. Analysis of observational data collected during the experiment shows that the auditory signal increased pedestrian-observing behavior and almost eliminated pedestrian motor vehicle conflicts at a signalized intersection. The presence of the auditory… Expand

To Go or Not to Go
Pedestrian safety is a major concern at signalized intersections because of an increased likelihood of pedestrian–vehicle conflicts. The objective of this study was to examine the factors possiblyExpand
Automated Analysis of Pedestrian–Vehicle Conflicts Using Video Data
This study is unique in its attempt to extract conflict indicators from video sequences in a fully automated way and provide detailed insight into the conflict process. Expand
One of the most frequent complaints received by traffic engineers employed by public agencies is that a pedestrian signal is either malfunctioning or improperly timed. Upon investigation, however,Expand
Scene-based pedestrian safety performance model in mixed traffic situation
scene-based analysis, which evaluates the safety performance of traffic intersections and segments where several pedestrian-vehicle conflicts may happen together, is conducted using 91 groups of scene data and a scene-based pedestrian safety performance evaluation model is built. Expand
Reducing conflicts between motor vehicles and pedestrians: the separate and combined effects of pavement markings and a sign prompt.
The effects of a symbolic "yield here to pedestrians" sign and advance yield pavement markings on pedestrian/motor vehicle conflicts, motorists' yielding behavior, and the distance motorists' yieldExpand
Accessible Pedestrian Signals: A Guide to Best Practices (Workshop Edition 2010)
This document provides an introduction to accessible pedestrian signals (APSs) and highlights issues related to the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of APSs. The report also addressesExpand
Driver perceptions of the safety implications of quiet electric vehicles.
Two German field studies examine the experiences of 70 drivers with low noise emissions of EVs and the drivers' long-term evaluation of the issue, suggesting that dangers associated withLow noise emissions might be less significant than previously expected. Expand
Automated Analysis of Pedestrian–Vehicle Conflicts
The feasibility of conducting a BA analysis with video data collected from a commercial-grade camera in Chinatown, Oakland, California is demonstrated, and the results exhibit a declining pattern of conflict frequency, a reduction in the spatial density of conflicts, and a shift in theatial distribution of conflicts farther from crosswalks. Chapter 25 – Pedestrians
Publisher Summary Pedestrian crashes are somewhat unique because the responsibility for them is not equally shared between drivers and pedestrians. In the case of pedestrian crashes, there areExpand
Accessible Pedestrian Signals
Push-button–integrated accessible pedestrian signals (APSs) provide audible information from the push-button housing on both the location of the push button and the onset of walk intervals. APSExpand

Pedestrian accidents and left-turning traffic at signalized intersections
The over-representation of left turning vehicles in accidents that occur at signalized intersections is an important problem in road safety. One aspect of this problem is that involving accidentsExpand
The research described was conducted to identify the causal factors controlling accidents experienced on different crosswalks of intersections on a test one-way street network and to recommendExpand
