The Escherichia coli ProU system is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) superfamily of transporters. ProU consists of three components (ProV, ProW, and ProX) and functions as a high-affinity, binding protein-dependent transport system for the osmoprotectants glycine betaine and proline betaine. The ProW protein is the integral inner membrane component of the ProU system.
