Early interactions between invading penetration hyphae of the pathogenic fungus Magnaporthe oryzae and rice cells occur at the apoplast, the free diffusional space outside the plasma membrane of leaves. After initial colonization, intercellular hyphae are again in intimate contact with the rice apoplast.
