Use of a systems approach, as embodied in the computer simulation model of metabolism of a dairy cow, Molly (Baldwin, 2005), is ideal for teaching nutrition. This approach allows the overall complexity of the comprehensive system to be broken down into smaller manageable subunits that are easier to visualize. Quantitative interactions among nutrients supplied and metabolic production processes can be observed over extended time periods. Using Molly, undergraduate animal science students are…

TLDR
The various types of beef cattle production models already in operation are reviewed in order to analyze Beef cattle production systems and their components and open an avenue to multi-disciplinary research projects.
Teaching comparative metabolism using a graphic computer model, Virtual Tissue.
The systems approach to teaching and understanding metabolism promotes a functional understanding of metabolite flow through pathways at the enzymatic, cellular, tissue, and whole body levels.
Animal sciences undergraduate education since the ASAS centennial: a national survey and scoping review
TLDR
It is suggested that future research in animal sciences teaching and learning will develop animal-science-specific expertise on a greater variety of pedagogies, validate improved methods for assessing transferable skills, and expand pedagogical knowledge of emerging topics.

Metabolism of the lactating cow: I. Animal elements of a mechanistic model
TLDR
Sensitivity and behavioural analyses undertaken using a mechanistic model of dairy cow metabolism indicate that concepts and data arising from tissue level experiments conducted in vitro can be used to structure and parameterize whole-animal models since the quantitative and dynamic behaviour of such a model is acceptable.
Metabolism of the lactating cow: III. Properties of mechanistic models suitable for evaluation of energetic relationships and factors involved in the partition of nutrients
TLDR
Two models of lactating dairy cows were constructed by combining mechanistic models of digestion and metabolism reported previously and by adding elements to allow simulation of changes in tissue metabolic capacities over time to illustrate the potential usefulness of mechanistic, as compared to empirical, models in analyses of energy balance in lactating Dairy cows.
Metabolic models of ruminant metabolism: recent improvements and current status.
TLDR
Significant progress has been made in model refinements over the past 10 yr as exemplified by the most recent NRC model (2001) and work on the Molly model of Baldwin and colleagues (1987).
Metabolism of the lactating cow: II. Digestive elements of a mechanistic model
TLDR
Overall stability and sensitivity of the model to individual parameters was generally satisfactory, but the need to improve the description and parameterization of aspects such as particle size in relation to availability, rate and affinity constants for amino acid degradation and rate constants for particle outflow from the rumen was established.
Modeling ruminant digestion and metabolism.
TLDR
This chapter provides an overview of the research program which for the past 25 years has involved the use and coordination of both experimental and modeling research approaches to advance the understanding of animal digestion and metabolism.
Responses of dairy cows supplemented with somatotropin during weeks 5 through 43 of lactation.
TLDR
Cows supplemented with bST produced more milk, consumed more feed, had lower rates of BW gain, and had improved efficiencies of milk production (conversion of feed and NEL to milk), and bST did not adversely affect reproduction or health.
Partition of nitrogen excretion in urine and the feces of holstein replacement heifers.
TLDR
Holstein heifers fed low N diets were able to maintain growth rates consistent with current recommendations while at the same time reducing N excretion, in particular nitrogenous compounds that are readily converted to ammonia.
Comparative evaluation of the Molly, CNCPS, and LES rumen models
Kinetics of amino acid extraction by lactating mammary glands in control and sometribove-treated Holstein cows.
TLDR
Examination of kinetic relationships between arterial concentration and mammary gland extraction of AA found increased extractions of Asp and Met by mammary glands in treated versus control cows were correlated positively with treatment-induced changes in arterial concentrations of these AA.
