Illegal logging is one of the main reasons of deforestation in natural forests and is the cause of high ecological and economic damage. Genetic methods are useful to infer species identity and are promising tools to control the geographic origin of logged timber. DNA barcoding and multilocus approaches using nuclear and chloroplast microsatellites as well as Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNPs) are the main methods in use to determine species identity.
