Th. aetiology of hyperemesis gravidarum has been the subject of much speculation and very little factual information. The possibility that ovarian and placental hormones may play some part has been suggested by various investigators (Anselmino and Hoffmann, 1936; Rakoff, 1940; Schoeneck, 1942), but at the time of writing little or no reliable information was available in the literature on the levels of such hormones in the body fluids of patients with this disease.
